This week I came across Photographer Andrew Zuckerman’s book project Wisdom. Inspired by the idea that wisdom is the greatest gift one generation can give to another, Andrew Zuckerman, in his 30’s, interviews, photographs and films 50 of the world’s great writers, actors, artists, designers, politicians, musicians and religious and business leaders of our time – all over 65 years of age.
I found the project very inspiring. This is not just another celebrity book. All the portraits are made on a plain white background to neutralize or remove them from their context. I typically am a fan of environmental portraits which add context. However placing a grouping of subjects as individuals in a white space as Zuckerman has done really works. The photographs emphasize the heart of this project, what the people have to say and how they relate to one another, not about who they are as celebrities.
I am also inspired by the integration of video and still photography. I love that you get a DVD with the book and that the project is both book and film. I love that you get a documentary on the making of the project. I love that the Wisdom web site is so giving and shows us all the photographs as well as excerpts from the DVD.
