Cherry Pie and a Photo Too

Cherry_Pie

Today was a day of family fun. We went cherry picking and believe it or not I left my camera behind, on purpose. Sometimes you just need to take a break, and that was what this day was for me. At least, most of it.

We came home with 25 pounds of beautiful cherries: Bing, Rainer, Sour. The afternoon saw us relaxing and eating cherries. After her nap, Shauna decided to make a pie. She does not eat gluten and has been working on some gluten free recipes. A gluten free cherry pie seemed in order. Not being able to completely have a day without taking a picture, I decided my job would be to photograph this beautiful creation; oh, and eat it too, that is taste test it for her.

How It Was Done

I’ll leave the specifics of how the pie was made up to her. However I will share how I made this photo.

The pie, straight out of the oven went on to a cooling rack on our dining room table. I liked the red wall in our dining room as a backdrop. The backdrop is lit by a Nikon SB800 strobe placed on the floor beneath the table pointign up at the wall. I wrapped aluminum foil around the strobe creating a “snoot” to tighten the light beam on the wall. The pie itself is lit by a second SB00 strobe placed above and at 45 degrees behind the pie camera left. For this strobe I used a shoot through umbrella to create a diffused light. I placed a piece of white foam-core board camera right opposite the umbrella to bounce some fill light into the shadows on the front of the pie.

That’s it. I hope the pie looks as delicious as it is.
