Asking Someone for Their Portrait

In my travel photography workshops I am often asked about my approach to getting people’s pictures. Approaching a total stranger on the street is hard. But it’s hard because of our own insecurities, and timidness. Your fears are going to hold you back from creating better portraits.

Watch the below video showing blogger/photographer Scott Schuman’s approach. Scott runs a fashion blog called the The Sartorialis. In the video you get to see Scott in action out on the street approaching and making portraits of total strangers. In the narative he talks mostly about the philosophy behind his work and blog, but you get to see how his simple confident approach, politness, respect and gratitude quickly establishes a rapport with his subjects and gains him their confidence.
