Aerial Photography of The Dominguez – Escalante National Conservation Area

richard durnan and crew in the planeA few weeks ago I was invited to join a flight over the newly designated Dominguez – Escalante National Conservation Area (NCA) and Dominguez Canyon Wilderness by the Western Colorado Congress (WCC). The purpose of this light was to document from the air the NCA and explore an adjacent area which the WCC is interested in protecting.

The Dominguez – Escalante National Conservation Area and the Dominguez Canyon Wilderness were made official on March 30, 2009, when President Barack Obama signed the Omnibus Public Lands Act which included this and other areas across the nation.

Back in my days as a backcountry ranger working for the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), I was responsible or patrolling the Dominguez and Escalante Canyon areas. My time working there allowed me to grow a strong connection with these canyons. Since that time I have been hiking, boating and photographing this amazing canyon country. The opportunity to photograph from the air was something I jumped at the opportunity to do. Below are some of the images I created on the flight for the WCC.

I plan in the future to share more of my land based images from the area. I am currently working on a black and white print series rom the NCA.
