Sailing the Sea Of Cortez: An Adventurous Start

Shauna Tewksbury sailing in the Sea of Cortez, Mexico: photo © Richard DurnanI’m on my way to Mexico today, again. I’m traveling with two friends from my home in Ridgway, Paul and Eric. We actually left yesterday, but 3 hours into the drive (we never got out of Colorado) the head gasket on Paul’s car blew. Eight hours later after a coolant system flush in a Wall Mart parking lot, lot of vehicular nursing, and stopping to get water out of roadside streams we made it home to Ridgway last night. This morning, in a new vehicle, we leave again.

Our plan is to sail on Paul’s sailboat the Ascention on the Sea of Cortez. This will be my second voyage on the Ascention, Paul’s Catamaran. I sailed earlier this year in Feburary with Paul and my girlfriend Shauna. I made this post, The Environment and Photography after that voyage.

This time will head north out of San Carlos, Mexico, cross the Sea of Cortez to the Baja Side and explore the Midriff Islands. I do not anticipate having a lot of opportunity for communication while I am on the water. But I will try to make a few posts if I can using a ham radio e-mail service from the boat. This system supports a position report for tracking our progress (click here) that updates each time we log in . Look for the Ascention’s call sign KC0OCW. This service will be active once we get under way in a few days.

Update:
I was not able to make posts from the boat as I had planned. The position reports viewable in the link above may no longer be available. A map showing my route is included in my travel log which you can read my post Sailing the Sea of Cortez: The Story.
